420 Stainless Steel tubing is a martensitic stainless steel with high strength hardness and resistance to corrosion. It contains 12-14% chromium a minimum of 0.15% carbon and traces of manganese, silicon, phosphorus and sulfur. With this composition, it is capable of very high hardness levels (up to 50 HRC) upon heat treatment. It has fair wear resistance, average corrosion resistance and good machinability. Though it excels in low corrosive environments, it is not as resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion as austenitic grades. Typical applications are for surgical instruments cutlery industrial valves and high-strength shafts with moderate corrosion resistance.
