The AWS Class ER420 filler wire and rod is crafted according to the American Welding Society (AWS) specification **A5.9** (ASME SFA 5.9) for solid stainless-steel filler metals. ([hindustaninox.com][1]) It’s specifically designed for MIG (GMAW) and TIG (GTAW) welding of martensitic stainless steels, especially those that need higher hardness, good abrasion resistance, and moderate corrosion resistance—think 12-14% Cr stainless alloys. ([Weldtool Technologies][2])
* Typical weld-metal chemistry includes: Carbon ~0.25–0.40%, Chromium ~12.0–14.0%, Nickel max ~0.60%, Molybdenum max ~0.75%, Manganese max ~0.60%, Silicon max ~0.50%. * As-welded mechanical properties show tensile strength reaching up to ~145,000 psi (≈ 1,000 MPa) and yield strength around ~120,000 psi (≈ 830 MPa), with elongation varying from ~16–45% based on treatment. ([hindustaninox.com][1]) * This filler metal needs pre-heat and interpass temperatures of at least ~400 °F (~204 °C), followed by slow cooling or suitable post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) to temper the weld deposit and achieve the best hardness and wear resistance. High hardness and wear resistance, ideal for welding martensitic stainless steels in applications requiring durable and abrasion-resistant joints under high stress.
Excellent hardness and wear resistance, suitable for welding martensitic stainless steels, ensuring strong, durable welds in high-stress and abrasive environments.
Superior hardness and abrasion resistance, perfect for welding martensitic stainless steels in applications demanding high strength, durability, and performance under extreme conditions.
AWS Class ER420 MIG and TIG Filler Welding Rod and Wire is applied where top hardness and wear resistance are needed. It finds frequent use in welding turbine parts, pump shafts, and tool steel parts. In the oil and gas sector, it is best suited for hardfacing operations, valve seating, and pipeline repair. It is further applied in the aerospace, automotive, and defense industries for producing parts that experience severe mechanical stress and high temperatures. It is also ideal for overlaying and restoring worn parts in industrial equipment.
The ER420 filler wire/rod is especially ideal for welding or surfacing martensitic stainless steels in situations where **abrasion, wear, and moderate corrosion resistance** are essential. For instance:
