ER316/316L wires have 17–19% chromium, 11–14% nickel, 2–3% molybdenum, and ≤0.03% carbon to be resistant to carbide precipitation. Mechanical characteristics are tensile strength of approximately 580 MPa, yield strength of 400 MPa, and elongation of around 35%. Weld metal provides superior resistance to corrosion and scaling in chloride-contaminated and acidic environments. The low-carbon ER316L type reduces intergranular corrosion and provides better weld joint toughness, and molybdenum increases pitting and crevice resistance.
